Why choose a bamboo toothbrush?
A staggering one billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year in the US alone. And each one takes hundreds of years to break down, which is a scary thought. In contrast, the body of a bamboo toothbrush should compost down within six months, so switching to a bamboo toothbrush is a very effective (and very easy) way to cut down on the amount of plastic your household is sending to landfill each year.
Caring for the bamboo toothbrush
Rinse the toothbrush after use and leave it upright to dry, ideally in a holder with a drainage hole so that it is not left standing in water. Although bamboo is naturally water resistant, it is an organic material so will degrade if left in very wet conditions for extended periods.
Disposal
If you follow the standard dentist recommendation to replace your toothbrush every three months, your bamboo toothbrush should still be going strong. Rather than disposing of it straightaway, why not put it to use cleaning those fiddly areas areas around the home first - like the grout in the bathroom, or your computer keyboard, or tools in the garage?
When the toothbrush is no longer fit for use, break off the head with the bristles and put this in your landfill waste. (Although nylon is theoretically recyclable, this facility is rarely available in practice.) The rest of the toothbrush is compostable and biodegradable so add it to your compost bin or green waste collection where it will harmlessly rot down.
